Travis Kelce has addressed speculation that he may have been a little too eager to play the role of gentleman during his date with Taylor Swift in New York last weekend.

The Kansas City Chiefs star was filmed beckoning a security guard out of the way before opening the door of the car Swift was in to escort her out of the vehicle.

In his New Heights podcast released on Wednesday, which Kelce co-hosts with his brother Jason, he explained how it actually went.

“Did you get any pushback for getting rid of security?” Jason asked.

“Push him out of the way? I didn’t push him!’ Kelce said. “I put my hand on the gentleman’s back to let him know I had his back.

“If I had pushed him, he probably would have turned around and bagged me.”

Jason – himself an NFL player with the Philadelphia Eagles – joked that Travis sounded like “someone who pushed someone.”

Travis took his older brother’s joke in good faith, saying, “It was more like, ‘Good lord, will you excuse me?’ I have to go to the door. Sorry. Right behind you. I don’t want to scare you. I know your job is to keep crazy people at bay and if you’re randomly pushed into the back while standing in front of a door, that can probably be a little alarming.”

But Jason wasn’t done yet.

“Do you feel like a security guard when you’re with Taylor?” Jason asked.

“I feel like on a date I feel like, ‘I’m a man in this situation; I’m protective,” Travis said. ‘Yeah right. You always have that feeling or self-consciousness, I think.’

Their weekend in New York came after Swift went to see Kelce play for the Chiefs against the Denver Broncos last Thursday night.

This coming weekend, the Chiefs host the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium and speculation will return once again as to whether Swift will attend the game.

She resumes her hugely popular Eras Tour in Argentina on November 9, meaning this weekend and next weekend’s match in Denver will be the last two she can see Kelce play.

On November 5, Kelce and the Chiefs will travel to Germany to play the Miami Dolphins.
