Colts’ rookie QB Anthony Richardson likely to miss the rest of the SEASON and could have shoulder surgery within days, owner Jim Irsay reveals: ‘He’s probably gone for the year’
Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson will likely miss the remainder of the regular season and could undergo shoulder surgery in the coming days, owner Jim Irsay has revealed.
Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft, hurt his right shoulder during Indianapolis’ win over the Tennessee Titans in week five.
“The biggest chance is that he will be gone this year,” Irsay told EPSN. “It’s not definitive, but he’ll probably miss this year and we’ll have to deal with that factor.”
The Colts have yet to determine if Richardson’s shoulder problem requires surgery or if it can be cured through rehabilitation alone.
“There is discussion going on, but it will probably lead to surgery in the next week,” Irsay added. “We’re just trying to figure out how and when and exactly what we want to do and what Anthony wants to do.”

Irsay told ESPN that the final decision will be left up to Richardson, but the team is treating the quarterback’s injury with caution given his long-term importance to the franchise.
Richardson was placed on injured reserve prior to Sunday’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. That result moved their record to 3-3 when the Cleveland Browns visited Lucas Oil Stadium this weekend.
“We think we still have an excellent football team,” Irsay emphasized.
The No. 4 overall pick hurt his shoulder late in the first half against the Titans when he fell awkwardly to the ground during a four-yard run with two defenders draped around him.
Richardson lay down for several minutes before slowly walking from the field to the injury tent with his shoulder slumped. A few minutes later, he emerged from the tent and walked into the locker room with the team’s medical staff.
It was his third injury in just five NFL games. He previously hurt his right knee in the season opener and suffered a concussion in Week 2 against the Houston Texans.
