PlayStation 5 Slim: Key Specifications

PRICE: £479.99 in the UK ($499.99 in the US). The Digital Edition, which does not include the disc, will retail for £389.99 (US$449.99).

Availability: November in the US, before it’s released in other countries

MAGNITUDE: 30% reduction in volume, 18 or 24% reduction in weight depending on the edition

Main features: Clear slits on both sides between the panels and dual USB-C ports on the front instead of the single USB-C and USB-A ports on the previous model

The new model is significantly smaller than the previous generation, bringing a 30 percent reduction in volume and an 18 or 24 percent reduction in weight depending on the edition.

For those who buy the digital edition, there will be an option to upgrade to the standard version by attaching the separate disc, which will cost £99 in the UK and $79.99 in the US.

Sony has announced that this model is meant to replace the previous version, meaning that once the remaining last generation consoles are sold out they will no longer be produced.

In a blog post, Sid Shuman, Senior Director of SIE Content Communications for Sony, said: “Once the inventory of the current PS5 model has been sold, the new PS5 will become the only model available.”

Beyond the size reduction, the overall design of the keyboard remains almost the same as previous versions.

Mr Shuman added: “There are four separate cover panels, with the top in a glossy look, while the bottom remains matte.”

The consoles now have clear slits on both sides between the panels and dual USB-C ports on the front instead of the single USB-C and USB-A port on the previous model.

The previous PS5 model was often criticized for its size at 15.3 in x 10.2 in x 4 in (39cm x 26cm x 10.4cm) - making the new slimmer version an attractive choice

These panels will cost £44.99 in the UK and $54.99 in the US.

While additional storage is optional, both new editions include 1TB of storage as standard – an increase from the 825GB available in the older version.

The new model will ship with a horizontal stand, but a vertical stand will also be available to buy separately for £24.99 in the UK and $29.99 in the US.

This release comes months after early designs for the PS5 were revealed by rival Microsoft.

In the June 22 filing, Microsoft claimed that Sony is “expected to release a PlayStation 5 Slim later this year at the same reduced price” as the “Least Expensive Digital Edition at $399.99.”

The new version of the PlayStation 5 will go on sale in November.
