EXCLUSIVE: ‘They were laughing and it was like they were having fun just killing all those young people’: Israeli civilians hiding in their safe rooms as they hear roaming squads of Hamas gunmen outside reveal their terror to MailOnline

Israelis hiding from Hamas terrorists while holed up in safe rooms near the Gaza border have revealed their horror at the attacks as they reveal tragic details such as slain friends, a massacre in a riot and the listening squad of gunmen from Hamas out.

Israeli medical student Bar Mizrachi, who was visiting his parents at their kibbutz two kilometers from the Gaza border, said he knew as soon as the rockets started at 6:30 a.m. that something was different about the attack.

“We are used to rockets and rockets coming, but the scale of the attack was something else,” says the 29-year-old, whose family was awakened by the alarm in the Kibbutz seconds before the rocket attacks began.

“I had a very bad feeling about it. The noise did not stop for twenty minutes and then we began to hear many alarms, gunshots and bombs.’

Each of the southern kibbutzim has units made up of members who were in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and its kibbutz was defended as Hamas terrorists tried to attack them.

“They managed to repel the terrorists, but two of our men were injured and one of them is now missing,” Bar said.

The unit is going door to door checking that everyone is OK, but it is a very scary and confusing time as people say Hamas are dressing up as our soldiers and knocking on doors.

Israel has confirmed that seven kibbutzim in the south – Nir Kitzhak, Nahal Oz, Nirim, Sufah, Magen, Holit, Nativ Ha’asara – are still subject to heavy gun battles between Hamas militants and the IDF.

“It’s a constantly moving situation,” a spokesman said.

Bar, his mother Gila, 59, and father Sufa, 66, were still in their safe room when they spoke to MailOnline.

One of their family friends told them that she had been forced to hide in the bushes for her life when the Palestinians, in one of their first acts, went on a rampage in the early hours of Kibbutz Reim.

“There was gunfire and she went to hide in the bushes and she could hear voices in Arabic shooting everyone in the eye,” he says.

“They were laughing and it was like they were having fun killing all those young people. Pictures were posted there on Al Jazeera showing militants standing over many bodies.’

The Israeli embassy has confirmed that ‘many’ were left dead or missing in the rampage.

One of his mother’s colleagues from a nearby kibbutz was also killed because when the terrorists entered her home, her safe room was not locked.

“We’re used to rocket attacks – we don’t expect people to try to break into our homes,” says Bar.

A cousin in another kibbutz told Bari’s parents that while they were in the safe room of their home, they could hear Palestinians sitting in their living room nearby.

β€œAnd we’ve just been told about a woman in labor in her safe room – and terrorists have just burnt down her house. We know many people who say their fathers or sisters have been abducted.’

Bar admitted he had no idea when his family would be able to leave their safe room. β€œWe don’t know what’s going to happen next – and we’re really worried about the hostages. We just hope to get our people back,” he said.

Another Israeli student, Eden Bart, was also hiding with her family in their kibbutz – Kfar Aza – and could hear gunfire from nearby Kibbutz Nahal Oz, a kilometer away. The family’s safe room is in the basement of their home – and they were still hiding there.

An air raid siren and then a bomb went off as MailOnline spoke to 27-year-old Eden, who was in the safe room with her parents, two siblings and the family dog.

“We ran downstairs as soon as the bomb alert went off,” she recalls. And then we heard rockets, bombs, planes, rockets, helicopters. The big difference with this attack is that there was infiltration.

“We can hear a lot of rifles, machine guns and some screaming – we think it’s from the kibbutz next to ours, which is occupied by Hamas.

“The only contact with the outside world has been through our phones. We’re a religious family, so we wouldn’t normally have our phones on on the Sabbath, but we knew people would worry about us.

“Some people we know have been killed in the kibbutz next door and in other places. We are still trying to find relatives and friends – nobody knows where these people are.’

Kibbutz militia with people who were formerly in the IDF were stationed on the street outside but Eden admitted it was a terrible time: ‘My grandparents are alone in their house across the street, there are many people who are alone and we are not’ I know what’s going on. We are sitting here feeling very stressed and fearing for our lives, especially as we know what is happening within a very short distance of us.’

Even if the IDF succeeds in securing the kibbutz, Eden admits she also feared what was to come: ‘We’ve all lived like this for a long time – we need peace. But things are likely to get worse – both for us and for the citizens of Gaza, who are also victims of Hamas.’
