A man accused of repeatedly exposing himself to school children has been charged with dozens of offences.

NSW Police say officers were patrolling the Merewether and Cooks Hill area of ​​Newcastle on Friday after receiving numerous reports of the alleged act.

Officers pursued a vehicle on Robey Road and arrested the driver, a 65-year-old man.

He was taken to Newcastle police station and charged with 45 offences, including 21 counts of committing an intentional sexual act on a child aged 10 to 16.

He was also charged with stalking and sexually assaulting a child.

A number of items were seized for further examination from both the vehicle and a house in the Newcastle area.
