All it took was seeing his only career defeat in the ring for Sonny Bill Williams to realize he had unfinished business as a boxer.

The 38-year-old, who was sensationally knocked out by MMA fighter Mark Hunt almost 12 months ago, admitted the shock loss still eats away at him.

Williams – who won two NRL premierships and two Rugby World Cups during a decorated football career spanning two codes, wants one more fight, with the opponent still to be determined.

It certainly won’t be against Hunt, who has confirmed his retirement.

“One of the hardest things I did after that fight was look back on it,” said Williams, whose career record is nine wins in 10 fights.

“When you’ve been a top athlete for so long, I feel like you have to be critical of your own performance, everything has to be perfect.

“I thought I was a failure because I was eliminated.”

After watching the fight, Williams believes he had a bad fight plan and also didn’t show enough animosity towards Hunt, whom he deeply respects.

Now, Williams wants out on her terms.

“I don’t need to fight for money. But what I miss about high performance is that buzz, bro. This buzz where everything is at stake,” he said The wide world of sport.

“As far as getting back in the ring, it has to be worth it.” If it’s a good fight, if it’s a big fight, yes, I’m excited.

Williams also said he is eager to lock down an opponent as soon as possible and start training for a 2024 fight.
