A senior Republican accused President Joe Biden of protecting his son by appointing one of Hunter’s former colleagues to lead the Office of Special Counsel.
Hampton Dellinger worked with Hunter Biden at a law firm involved with energy company Burisma Holdings.
He also served as an assistant attorney general at the Justice Department until June and was nominated as special counsel by the White House on Tuesday.
The move could put him in charge of an office that protects whistleblowers.
Republicans were quick to call foul.
Republican Rep. James Comer accused President Joe Biden of protecting his son by appointing one of Hunter’s former colleagues to lead the Office of Special Counsel

“President Biden’s decision to appoint Hunter Biden’s former colleague to head the Office of Special Counsel raises concerns that he is trying to protect his son rather than whistleblowers,” Comer, R-Ky., told Fox NewsDigital.
“The Office of Special Counsel is responsible for investigating whistleblower retaliation at agencies such as the Department of Justice and the Department of the Treasury.
“Calling a friend of the Biden family in this position does not inspire confidence that the law will be fairly enforced.”
Before joining the Justice Department, the Yale-educated attorney was part of Boies Schiller Flexner’s crisis management and government response team, at a time when Hunter Biden was working for the office.
It represented Ukrainian energy company Burisma Holdings, where Biden once sat on the board of directors.
In its announcement, the White House praised his record.
“As a partner at regional and national law firms, he has represented whistleblowers and other clients challenging government activities,” the report said.
“His work has resulted in savings for taxpayers by undoing unnecessarily expensive bids.”

The role is not related to the special counsel investigating the president’s handling of classified documents.
But Republicans are concerned about the ties between Hunter and Dellinger.
Fox News Digital reported that emails recovered from Hunter’s Biden’s laptop showed the two men working closely together, and that the then-vice president’s son attended a private meeting with Dellinger and other staff in March 2014.
An email from a month earlier suggested they were on friendly terms.
Dellinger said it was “great to see (him) last week” and asked if he would attend an attorney luncheon.
