Dave Hughes fights back tears as he reveals devastating personal news: ‘It won’t be long’

Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes fought back tears on Friday as he paid a moving tribute to his ailing mother.

The 52-year-old comedian told listeners during 2 Days Hughesy, Ed & Erin that his mother Carmel, 83, is in hospital and “probably won’t wake up.”

“It’s been a tough few weeks,” said an emotional Dave.

‘My mother is unwell and the family have gathered around her and we are celebrating her life… she is still with us but it won’t be for much longer.’

Dave described her as a wonderful matriarch and said Carmel, who had grown up in an orphanage, had been a wonderful mother to him.

The 52-year-old comedian told listeners on 2 Day’s Hughesy, Ed & Erin that his mother Carmel, 83, is in the hospital and “probably won’t wake up.”

“She has done so well in her life, we will miss her very much… but she has always been stoic and never complained,” he continued.

“She’s sleeping now and probably won’t wake up.”

Dave explained that despite all her recent hardships, Carmel has kept her sense of humor during her hospital stay.

“One of the nurses picked her up and said ”Sorry if I let you down” and mom said ”it doesn’t matter now”.

Dave told another story about how one of his nieces had knocked a bucket next to Carmel’s bed during a hospital visit.

“Mom said, ‘I’m the one kicking things off, not you.’

Co-host Erin Molan then added, “She’s your mother, isn’t she.”

Dave lost his father Desmond in November 2010.

He spoke about his father’s death from cancer at the age of 78 in an interview with the Herald Sun in 2010.

Shortly before he died, the TV presenter told his father – who also suffered from dementia – that he loved him and appreciated everything he had done for the family. ‘

You don’t tell people you love them because it’s embarrassing to say it. Or tell people you appreciate what they have done for you. So I did that very late,” he admitted. “I think he heard me.”
