Winning SEC football games can be costly, as the University of Mississippi is learning after being fined $75,000 by the conference following Saturday’s 55-49 upset over LSU, the conference announced Wednesday.

The penalty was assessed specifically for Ole Miss fans throwing debris on the field, resulting in a stoppage of play in the fourth quarter.

“The disruption and delay of Saturday night’s game should never be part of any SEC event,” said SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey. “These actions are consistent with the oversight assigned to the SEC Office by Members, including the financial penalty and mandatory assessments.”

This is in addition to the $100,000 fine Ole Miss received for fans who stormed the field at the last gun on Saturday.

Both fines will be deducted from the university’s share of the SEC’s revenue distribution.

The SEC also ordered Ole Miss to attempt to identify the individuals who threw objects and ban them from attending any further Rebel sporting events for the remainder of the 2023-2024 academic year.

Ole Miss must review and update its game management procedures and alcohol availability policies to prevent another such incident and file a report with the SEC office.

The league could suspend alcohol sales at Ole Miss games if conditions are not met.

The scene became hectic after the final whistle, when an out-of-control Rebels fan was seen being pushed to the grass after running into Tigers defensive tackle Jacobian Guillory.

A year ago, it was the University of Tennessee that secured a six-figure fine for celebrating a victory over an SEC rival when the Volunteers upset Alabama in Knoxville.

Not only was the school fined $100,000, but officials had to turn to fans to help pay for new goalposts after students ripped their goalposts out of the stadium and dumped them in a nearby river.

Athletics director Danny White tweeted: “We had some fun, didn’t we?” and asked fans to “help us.”
