Dan Burn says he is waiting to be woken from a dream after the former Newcastle season ticket holder scored on his Champions League debut during the 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain.

The defender, who worked in Asda as a teenager, headed his hometown team’s second goal on a night that will go down in Geordie history.

Burn said: “I’ve had a very up and down career. I was released by Fulham at the age of 25, so to be playing Champions League now is like a dream, like I’m waiting for someone to wake me up. Since I got here, the upward trajectory has been almost like waiting for the bubble to burst.”

Eddie Howe’s side were brilliant from the start, rattling the French champions with their aggressive pressing.

“We had to upset them and our crowd helped us do that,” the head coach said. ‘It was a great evening, so many stories in the match itself, but above all I am happy for the supporters.

‘They are such a good team, we had to defend well and we did that. I really loved our spirit and collective energy.

“We created positive things in the first half with our pressing, all the things we do well when we play well. In the second half we had to dig deep and try to get over the line.’

Miguel Almiron fired in the opener before Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schar scored in the second half. Geordie midfielder Longstaff said: “With me and Dan scoring on a night like this, it’s quite surreal. We dream.’
