A cafe advertising an outrageously expensive portion of banana bread has sparked outrage among customers.
Those fancying a helping of the sweet breakfast favorite from The Boathouse on Shelly Beach, on Sydney’s northern beaches, will have to shell out an eye-watering $18.
A photo of the menu was posted on social media platform Reddit with the pointed comment: “Surely $18 for takeaway banana bread is now worth it.”
Most agreed that the location tried its luck, even though it is in a relatively remote family-friendly location, a short walk from Manly’s main beach.
‘Is it a loaf of bread or a slice…? I can understand a loaf of bread,” one person wondered.
A café menu offering takeaway banana bread for $18 each has caused a shock with its eye-watering price
“Nah f*** that,” said another.
‘I work in an expensive but busy cafe, and this is really terrible compared to us.’
“Easy, don’t buy it, make your own for a tiny fraction of $18,” said another person.
Some saw the funny side.
“I blame the criminals in the banana industry,” one person joked.
“Big Banana,” was the quick response.
However, one person defended the pricing.
“If it’s homemade, along with the honey and mascarpone, it’s probably about right,” they said.
‘Would I buy it? No.’
This reasoning did not impress everyone.
“Unless the mascarpone has been fermented in a high quality glass with high fat whole milk from the fattest and happiest cow in Gippsland, I don’t see the point in paying $18 for it,” one person commented.
Another did a quick bit of math.
“For example, if you get 8 slices on a banana bread, that costs about $144 per loaf…,” they calculated.
It wasn’t just the banana bread that caught the attention of Reddit users, with some also commenting on avocado toast costing $25, while a bacon spring roll was a relatively cheap $19.
“The whole menu could be ruined,” said one.
Some people commented that it would be much better to make or buy banana bread than spend money at the cafes
“So the entire menu is an absolute rip off,” read another angry comment.
‘But it’s clear that people pay those prices, so you can’t blame the pub owner.
“There are still many people who have made money and are willing to spend any amount of money for a temporary escape from reality.”
Other prices that drew a lot of comments were $9 for a single slice of sourdough toast and $19 for a fruit salad with added granola or yogurt, which cost an extra $6.
“I’m just fixated on the $25 avocado toast!” That’s the highest I’ve ever seen,” one person wrote.
“Avocados cost 99 cents and they charge $25 for half a piece of bread,” said another in surprise.
“Yeah, good thing I invested in real estate because there was no way I could afford breakfast these days!” another wrote ironically.
Daily Mail Australia contacted The Boathouse for comment.
