Team Europe is closing in on an emphatic Ryder Cup victory after maintaining a commanding five-point lead over Team USA heading into Sunday’s singles in Rome.
Luke Donald’s side started day five ahead and extended their lead after topping the foursomes session on Saturday, only for Team USA to claim three points in the fourballs and close the gap to 10.5-5.5 at Marco Simone GC .
Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Åberg had reduced Scottie Scheffler to tears earlier in the day after beating world number 1 and Brooks Koepka 9&7, the biggest 18-hole victory in Ryder Cup history, but struggled in the afternoon session and fell to a loss of 4&3. to Sam Burns and Collin Morikawa.
Max Homa and Brian Harman claimed their second point of the day as they survived a late comeback from Tommy Fleetwood and Nicolai Hojgaard to earn a 2&1 win, temporarily leaving a clean sweep of Team USA possible with two games remaining.

The Europa were one ahead with two to play against Wyndham Clark and Patrick Cantlay, who calmed the home crowd by birdieing the 17th and notching a sensational birdie from 13 yards on the last for a 1up win and session win for the visitors.
Europe needs four points in Sunday’s singles match to reclaim the trophy and win a seventh consecutive home edition of the biennial competition, while Zach Johnson’s US team needs eight points to retain the cup and 8.5 points to ending the 30-year wait for away victory. soil.
