Google Pixel 7 Pro colors confirmed in weird potato chip tweet

One of the few big phones yet to launch in 2022 is the Google Pixel 7, along with its Pro sibling, and a series of bizarre potato chips have revealed the shades the models will come in.
Google Japan has posted on Twitter and its own website detailing the four different colorways, each pairing with some potato chip flavors it (supposedly) invented.

There’s Hazel Onion for the off-green version, Salty Lemon for the lime green, Obsidian Pepper for the black handset and, our favorite, Snow Cheese for the white.
It’s worth pointing out that in Google’s images, the standard Pixel 7 is shown in black and lime green, while the Pro is shown in off-green and white. It’s not clear if this is for illustrative purposes, or if some shades are locked on certain phones.
These aren’t the real names for the Pixel 7 range’s color options, worth noting; Google has previously used food to promote its cellphones, shipping some Pixel 4 devices in fun cereal box packages and again pairing Pixel 6 devices with chips. So it’s just a weird marketing game, but one that reveals to us the colors of the phones in all their glory.
From our research, we can’t see that Hazel Onion, Obsidian Pepper, or Salty Lemon are real flavors of… well, anything, but apparently snow cheese in Korean cuisine, a powdery substance made from cheese, garlic, and onion that’s used to make to cover certain dishes. Since the teasers were posted exclusively on Google’s Japanese social media channels, we assume that this is a coincidence.
We’ve actually seen a lot of these colors since Google already showed the Pixel 7 phones earlier this year, but these new images mean something different.
Analysis: the plagues begin
Google is building up to its phone launches in a way, which is quite rare in the cell phone industry.
Rather than keep quiet on the devices and then reveal all the information in one fell swoop, Google tends to tease its phones in the run-up to their launch. That happened a lot with the Pixel 6 series, which built up quite a bit of hype.
It’s likely that Google will follow that strategy in 2022, as we don’t expect the Pixel 7 phones to launch until October.
Other than the first reveal at Google IO in May, this is the first tease we’ve seen for the Pixel 7, but it may be the first of many. If Google uses its strategy for 2021 again, we could hear a lot more about the new devices.
