A large hot air mass that broke Perth’s September heat record on Wednesday will head east, bringing sweltering weather to the rest of Australia.

The record-breaking heat will move to the east coast as most states prepare for a long weekend and the NRL Grand Final.

The system will be the first to reach South Australia, with the maximum temperature in Adelaide rising from 21°C on Wednesday to 25°C on Thursday.

Those temperatures will continue to rise with a high of 28 degrees Celsius on Friday and 31 degrees Celsius on Saturday.

Adelaide residents will get a brief break from the heat on Sunday as clouds move over the city, dropping the high to 21 degrees Celsius before jumping back to 31 degrees Celsius on Monday.

The western New South Wales city is expected to feel the heat from Friday, with maximum temperatures in Broken Hill hovering in the low 30s Celsius ahead of a forecast of 36 degrees on Sunday.

The hottest day of the Canberra long weekend will be on Sunday with a high of 29 degrees Celsius and windy conditions.

The warm weather will see maximum temperatures in Sydney rise from 22°C on Thursday to 29°C, followed by a weekend high of 35°C on Sunday.

Weather zone meteorologist Ben Domensino said the heat system could break records in Sydney.

“Parts of western Sydney are expected to reach around 36 degrees Celsius on Sunday and 37 to 38 degrees Celsius on Tuesday,” he said.

‘If a weather station in Greater Sydney exceeds 37.3 degrees Celsius in the first three days of October, it will be the highest temperature recorded in the Sydney Basin this early in the spring.

‘Although temperatures in the city should be slightly cooler than in the western suburbs during the opening days of October, they could reach around 35 degrees Celsius in the CBD on Sunday.

“If temperatures rise above 34.6 degrees Celsius on October 1, it will be the city’s warmest day on record this early in the spring.”

Adelaide will be the first capital to feel the heat, with the maximum temperature rising from 21°C on Wednesday to 25°C on Thursday

Mr Domensino added that the heat could affect Sunday night’s NRL Grand Final.

“For NRL fans attending the grand final between the Brisbane Broncos and Penrith Panthers at Olympic Park on Sunday evening, temperatures could still be close to 30 degrees Celsius at kick-off,” he said.

“Sunday’s heat will make for a sweaty night for fans and players alike, not that Brisbane and Penrith teams have to worry too much about that.”

Temperatures in Brisbane are expected to remain steady until next week, with highs around 27C and 28C.

Melbourne won’t see much change either with temperatures hovering around 20 degrees Celsius, barring the odd 29 degrees Celsius day on Saturday.

Winds are expected to increase over Hobart from Thursday afternoon, before rain and cloudy conditions prevail for the weekend.

Perth, which saw its hottest September day in almost 150 years on Wednesday at 34.3 degrees Celsius, will start to cool from Friday with a high of 22 degrees on Saturday and 21 degrees on Sunday.

The weather in Darwin remains warm and sunny, with highs around 30 degrees Celsius throughout the weekend.
