Daniel Andrews is quitting as Victorian Premier after a shock announcement

Daniel Andrews has announced his resignation as Premier of Victoria in a shock announcement.

He addressed the media after hosting a press conference in Melbourne on Tuesday afternoon.

Andrews’ nine-year tenure in the role ends Wednesday at 5 p.m.

He said he made the difficult decision after recent conversations with his wife Catherine and their three children.

“Today I will visit Government House again and resign as Prime Minister and Member for Mulgrave tomorrow at 5pm,” Andrews told reporters.

‘When it’s time, it’s time.

“It is not an easy task as the chief minister of our state. It requires 100 percent of you and your family. This is of course limited in time and now is the time to distance ourselves.

“The only way I know how to do this work is to let it consume me. Every waking moment is about work and that takes its toll.’

Sky News reported that Melbourne identity and TV personality Eddie McGuire told a packed lunch that Victoria would have a new premier on AFL Grand Final day, which is four days away.

More to come.
