Artificial intelligence threatens to ‘destabilize’ the world order, the deputy prime minister warned the UN.
Oliver Dowden said governments are in a race against time as global regulations fail to keep pace with technology.
He addressed the UN General Assembly in a speech on the subject, ahead of the UK hosting an AI summit this autumn.
Speaking in New York last night, Mr Dowden called for a “new form of multilateralism” to manage rapidly developing technology.
He said: ‘In the past, leaders have responded to scientific and technological developments with retroactive regulation.

Mr Dowden suggested that the international community should have some control over AI from technology companies
‘But in this case, the necessary guardrails, regulation and governance must be developed in a parallel process with technological advances. Yet global regulations are currently lagging behind current developments.’
Mr Dowden suggested that the international community should have some control over AI from technology companies.
“Because technology companies and non-state actors often have nationwide influence and prominence in AI, this challenge requires a new form of multilateralism,” he said.
He emphasized that AI will be a tool for both good and evil, highlighting its potential in areas such as medicine and the fight against climate change. Britain will host an AI safety summit in November, attended by world and tech leaders.
