Ella Cutler: WA officer returns home after being left in a coma following a fall from a cliff in Croatia

The family of an Australian officer who fell 11 meters from a cliff in Croatia, leaving her in a medically induced coma, have finally welcomed her home to Australia.

Western Australian police officer Ella Cutler, 25, fell from a cliff at Pile, northwest of Dubrovnik, in the early hours of August 26.

She had been drinking and was with a 34-year-old man when the pair suddenly fell over a waist-high wall, leaving Ms Cutler with devastating injuries including fractures to her spine, head, limbs and ribs.

She was rushed to hospital in critical condition and has remained there in Croatia ever since.

But on Friday evening, Ms Cutler was seen on the tarmac at Perth Airport as she was taken off a special medical flight and taken to Royal Perth Hospital where her treatment is expected to continue.

The young officer arrived at the Royal Perth Hospital Emergency Triage at 10.16pm on Friday, smiling and waving, where she was greeted by her mother and a friend, The West reported.

A hospital spokesman said Ms Cutler was in a serious but stable condition.

The policewoman was able to return home after a massive fundraiser led to $530,000 being secured for her medical bills in just six days.

The air ambulance needed to take her home to Perth alone cost $400,000.

Tokyo Marine is the underlying insurer for the travel insurance sold to Ms Cutler by insurance company RAC.

Ms Cutler’s insurance claim was initially rejected because she had been drinking when she fell.

“We deeply sympathize with Ms Cutler and her family at this difficult time,” a Tokyo Marine spokesperson previously told Daily Mail Australia.

“We can confirm that we have provided Ms Cutler and her family with a range of support since the incident occurred.

‘We are currently assessing an open claim and look forward to working with them towards a positive outcome. Due to privacy concerns, we cannot provide further information about their specific policy or claim.”

Mrs Cutler was traveling through Europe on holiday when her trip came to a terrible end after her near-fatal fall, which also punctured her lungs.

The man Ms Cutler was with at the time suffered a broken leg but is recovering after undergoing surgery.

Doctors had told the woman’s family there was only a five percent chance she would survive.

Although she can now breathe on her own, Ms Cutler’s brother Joshua says she faces a long road to recovery, including several months of rehabilitation.

Andrijana Biskup, from the Dubrovnik-Neretva police, confirmed that the couple were hugging or kissing when the fall occurred and said alcohol may have played a role.

The local hospital confirmed that blood alcohol tests showed the man had a reading of 0.2 – four times the legal driving limit in Australia – while the woman had a reading of 0.3, or six times the legal driving limit.

The couple were said to have been on a night out at the time of the accident in Dubrovnik’s Old Town, which is packed with tourists every summer.
