Russell Brand has broken his silence, claiming he has had an “extraordinary and disturbing week” after being accused of rape, sexual assault and emotional abuse.
In a short three-minute video, the under-fire comedian thanked his followers for their “support and for questioning the information you have been given,” before announcing he would return to his show on Rumble.
In a wide-ranging speech, he accused the British government of demanding major tech platforms censor his online content and lashed out at his former employer, the BBC, for its trust news initiative tackling fake news.
Over the past week, several women have come forward with allegations against the 48-year-old comedian, which they say occurred at the height of his fame.
The shocking claims, which are said to have taken place between 2003 and 2013, also include the alleged rape of a woman in his home Los Angeles in 2013 and alleged the sexual assault of a 16-year-old schoolgirl.
Brand denied the allegations, claiming any relationship he had was consensual, and has so far remained silent since The Sunday Times and Channel 4’s Dispatches first reported the allegations of predatory and abusive behavior on Saturday.
