A gunman is on the run after two people were rushed to hospital following an early morning shooting.

A 42-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman were found with gunshot wounds on Cassia Crescent in Gateshead, Lake Macquarie, in the Hunter region of New South Wales, at 2.20am on Thursday.

Officers from Lake Macquarie Police District were informed that the two men were allegedly shot by a 30-year-old man who fled the scene.

Emergency crews treated both victims at the scene, before they were transported to John Hunter Hospital.

A gunman is on the run after two people were rushed to hospital following an early morning shooting.

A NSW Ambulance spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia paramedics treated the man for injuries he suffered to his arm.

Paramedics treated a woman with a leg injury at the scene.

Both victims were hospitalized in stable condition.
