A New England Patriots season ticket holder was ‘beaten to death’ by a Miami Dolphins supporter at Gillette Stadium, according to witnesses.

Father-of-two Dale Mooney, 53, of Newmarket, New Hampshire, died on Sunday following an incident in the 300-tier segment of the arena just before 11pm.

The Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office said police responded to calls for medical assistance in the section at 10:57 p.m. and that “the case remains actively investigated.”

A witness at the scene, Joseph Kilmartin, described the alleged attack by a Miami Dolphins fan as “hard to watch.”

β€œThey started wrestling each other for a few minutes,” Kilmartin said WCVB.

β€œAt one point another Dolphins fan came by. He hit him three times, and the man just went out. It was pretty hard to watch.”

Several other anonymous witnesses gave similar descriptions of the “brutal” attack that left Mooney “crumbling” as they spoke to Boston10 on the spot.

β€œOne word I can really use is shocking,” said one bystander. β€œMy thoughts go out to that man’s family. It’s terrible what happened,” another person commented.

Mooney’s devastated wife said she felt “numb” after hearing the horrific news about her husband and father-of-two, who has been a devoted Patriots season ticket holder for 30 years.

‘I just feel numb. I can’t even believe this is real,” Lisa Mooney said WCVB.

‘I don’t understand why people have to go to that extreme. Why can’t it just be fun, that’s all it’s supposed to be, just a fun family event.”

She added that her husband had no medical condition that caused him to faint, and that he “has the patience of a saint.”

“I don’t know what happened…it takes a lot to make him angry,” she said.

The Public Prosecution Service said the investigation into his death was following “normal protocol” and that an autopsy would take place in the coming days.

No arrests have been made following the incident.
