A 49-year-old man is fighting for his life after a horrific home invasion in Merewether, Newcastle.

Police were called to a home on Coane Street around 3 a.m. Tuesday after reports of a home invasion.

Four teenage intruders entered the home, leading to a confrontation with the homeowners.

During the scuffle, the 49-year-old was stabbed in the abdomen and the intruders fled.

The injured man was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition, while a 75-year-old woman was also treated for minor injuries.

Shortly afterwards, police arrested five teenagers, two boys and three girls, believed to be involved in the incident.

They are currently working with authorities at Newcastle Police Station.
