A 7-year-old girl, who was also in the back seat, was taken to hospital with head injuries.
Harrowing images from the scene show the wrecked Ford on its side as the road is littered with debris from the wreck.
Police allege the driver of the Jeep was driving on the wrong side of the road when he crashed into the family’s Ford.
The driver of the Jeep, a 65-year-old Mont Albert North man who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was arrested at the scene.
He has since been charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death and four counts of dangerous driving causing serious injury.
He was granted bail to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on September 25.
A passenger in the Jeep, a 61-year-old Kew woman, was also injured.
She was taken to hospital in stable condition.
“The circumstances surrounding the collision have yet to be determined and the investigation is ongoing,” a police statement said.
Anyone with dashcam footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
The fatality brings the toll in Victoria to 215 lives lost by 2023, 42 more than this time last year.
Police are appealing to all motorists to take care on the roads during Victoria’s school holidays, which are now underway.
