I’m an architect – here are five things to avoid when renovating your bathroom

I am an architect. Here are five things to avoid when renovating your bathroom

A top architect has shared the worst mistakes homeowners can make when renovating their bathrooms.

Sydney-based Georgina Wilson has over twenty years of experience in home design and has seen many clients make mistakes that could cost them to fix in the future.

In a TikTok video titled, “5 Things I Would Never Do as an Architect: Small Bathroom Edition,” the architect explains how to make the most of a small space.

Her first suggestion, which she shares with her 122,600 followers, is to never use an inward-opening door.

According to the architect, this design could make your small bathroom feel even more cramped.

She said, “It’s much more space-efficient to use a pocket-sized sliding door or an outward-opening door.”

Georgina advised her followers never to include both a bath and a shower, meaning followers will have to choose between relaxation and space.

She explained: ‘Having a generous shower makes the room look open and spacious.’

Her third point has somewhat divided followers, as she advised never installing heated floors.

She said: ‘There just isn’t enough dry floor space in a very small bathroom to make it worth it.’

Although it may seem impossible to avoid this, Georgina advised: ‘Never place the toilet directly in the entranceway.

She added: ‘Place a sink or window as the main view when entering the bathroom.’

Another popular renovation choice that the expert warned against was attaching your toilet brush to the wall.

She explained, “You’ll no doubt want to throw it in the trash at some point.

‘The built-in holders are overly finicky and involved. Do you really want unnecessary holes in your carefully waterproofed beautifully tiled walls?

Since its publication, the popular video has been viewed 824,000 times and viewers are divided over the advice.

While some have praised the architect for her ‘good points’, others strongly disagree with her methods.

‘Not even with the underfloor heating. Always worth it,” one person wrote.

A second user said: ‘Parents of young children would disagree about the bathtub.’

One passionate user wrote: ‘I disagreed, then disagreed, then disagreed! It seems that finding the right architect is an essential part of the process.

Meanwhile, one observant user commented: ‘I’ve never seen a bathroom with an outward opening door.’

After much demand, Georgina posted a part 2 to her video. She shared even more helpful advice on TikTok, including never using more than one type of tile and never using large vanities.
