  • The all-rounder hit nine sixes and 15 fours in a stunning innings at The Oval
  • His innings helped England reach a score of 368 all out in the third ODI

Ben Stokes achieved the highest score in English ODI history with a sensational knock during the third ODI against New Zealand at The Oval on Wednesday.

Stokes smashed 182 runs off just 124 balls, hitting nine sixes and 15 fours along the way.

The Test captain, who retired ahead of the World Cup, fell just short of a remarkable double century when he was dismissed off Benjamin Lister’s bowling.

Stokes broke the record of Jason Roy, who scored 180 against Australia in Melbourne in 2018.

He was still far behind the highest score of any player in the format, that of Rohit Sharma (264 off 172 balls).

Stokes’ innings helped England reach a huge score of 368 all out.

England were 13-2 after 16 balls following Trent Boult’s dismissal of Jonny Bairstow (0) – after the first ball of the innings – and Joe Root (4).

Stokes and Dawid Malan (96 off 95 balls) set up a 199-run stand for the third wicket by sending New Zealand’s bowlers to all corners of the ground.

Malan fell just short of his fifth ODI century when he fell behind to Boult after Stokes reached his fourth hundred in 93 innings, surpassing his previous best ODI knock of 102.

Stokes’ eventual dismissal, caught by Will Young at square leg after a full toss from pacer Lister, caused England to collapse from 348–5 to an all-out 22 balls later for the addition of just 20 runs.

Roy missed out again for England after suffering another back spasm hours before the match. The opener missed the first two games with the same problem and could now be doubtful for the World Cup that starts in three weeks.

Harry Brook, who is trying to replace Roy or another batsman in the World Cup squad, was dropped from the squad to accommodate the return of Malan, who missed the second ODI after his wife gave birth to their son on Saturday.
