Whoopi Goldberg returns to The View wearing Alabama brawl folding chair necklace after recovering from her third bout of COVID
She may have missed the season 27 premiere of The View, but Whoopi Goldberg received a warm welcome to the talk show — with viewers noticing an interesting piece of jewelry around her neck.
The 67-year-old ABC talk show host was struck by her third bout of COVID before the show’s new season, returning to a standing ovation from fans.
Whoopi was seen wearing a silver chain with a matching folding chair pendant, in reference to the infamous Montgomery riverfront brawl in Alabama last month.
The brawl on August 5 is said to have started after a group of white boaters attacked the black dock worker Dameion Pickett, while trying to get them out of their designated area so he could dock the Harriott II, a tourist ship in the city.
The folding chair hanger, she explainedwas in honor of Reggie Ray, the boat captain who hit several people with a white folding chair while defending his crew during the brawl.
Whoopi returned to ABC’s The View on Monday after recovering from her third bout of COVID
She showed off her silver necklace, which contained a small folding chair, in honor of the brawl in Alabama on August 5
Whoopi started her story by saying she “doesn’t condone violence” but wanted to share why she wore the pendant.
“But there was a story last month in Montgomery, Alabama, where a riverboat captain (with) 227 passengers tried to dock his boat where it was supposed to be,” she said on Monday’s episode.
“The co-captain, who happened to be Black, confronted this pontoon boat that was in the way… so a fight ensued and something happened that we didn’t see.”
Whoopi then referred to the group of people – predominantly black – who came to Pickett’s defense.
As a clip of the brawl played in the background, Whoopi continued, “Black people came out of nowhere. We fell from the sky. It was crazy… the memes are off the hook. I’m carrying a folding chair.’
Cohost Sunny Hostin acknowledged that people were upset about the folding chair, but that it was less dangerous than it could have been.
“Personally, I’d rather have a folding chair than a gun,” she joked. “That’s why no one was killed in this brawl.”
“What we all take away from this is that if we don’t want to get hit, we don’t hit other people,” Whoopi concluded the segment.
“If anyone does his job, let him do his job.”
She added: “We’re making light of it, but the truth is it didn’t go wrong because there were no weapons. So let’s not do that again.’
Whoopi returned to the table with Sunny Hostin, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro and Alyssa Farah Griffin, where she talked about the infamous brawl
The longtime talk show host missed the season premiere of The View, but immediately dove into an explanation about her necklace
She used the brawl to remind viewers of her stance on guns, saying things “didn’t go south because there were no guns.”
The scuffle reportedly broke out on August 5 over a dock on the Montgomery waterfront
The shocking brawl was captured on video from several angles and posted on social media
Viewers noticed her current necklace and responded via social media.
“It’s Whoopi Goldberg wearing the folding chair chain for me,” said one fan wrote, with smiling face emojis.
“Not Whoopi comes back to #theview with a silver folding chain and talks about the Montgomery brawl,” another laughed.
The now-viral brawl in Montgomery is said to have started after a group of white private boat owners took over the designated dock of a tourist riverboat that Ray was piloting.
The group became irate after being asked to move to make room for the riverboat and broke out in a vicious fight.
Videos posted online show men stabbing each other in the eyes and throwing punches at each other’s heads, and several people are seen using folding chairs as weapons – including a man leaving a woman on the ground after hitting her with the chair has abused.
Ray was the only person arrested who was not charged with assault, but he was charged with disorderly conduct, Hostin noted, as his actions were considered defense of himself and others.
Four of the white boaters have pleaded not guilty to assault.
