Dallas Cowboys’ star quarterback Dak Prescott will be out for ‘a few weeks’ and is heading for SURGERY after injuring his hand in the team’s Week 1 defeat by the Bucs, according to owner Jerry Jones.

Prescott jogged to the locker room in the fourth quarter after having his throwing hand examined by team doctors at the side of the field, leaving Cowboys fans fearing the worst.

And now those fears have been realized after Jones told the media postgame that Prescott is heading for surgery and will be sidelined for at least the next few weeks.

The injury appeared to occur when the QB struck the hand of Bucs’ outside linebacker Shaq Barrett, and Jones revealed that he has suffered a fracture near the thumb of his throwing hand.

The news capped a miserable start to the season for the Cowboys, who fell to a 19-3 loss to Tom Brady and Tampa Bay at the AT&T Stadium.

Prescott is now 2-5 in season openers for his career, and he completed just 14 of 29 passes for 134 yards before leaving the game late on.

Worryingly for Mike McCarthy, the last time the Cowboys scored fewer than six points in the first game of a season was back in 1989. Coincidentally, that was the first game of Jones’ ownership of the team.

Prescott holds the key to their success this season, having signed a four-year, $160million contract in 2021, and his absence will be strongly felt.

It is expected that the Cowboys will now rely on backup quarterback Cooper Rush for next week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, who are also looking for their first win of the season having lost in overtime to the Steelers earlier on Sunday.
