Luis Rubiales has resigned as president of the Spanish Football Federation after weeks of controversy.

Rubiales faced widespread criticism after kissing Jenni Hermoso following Spain’s victory over England in the Women’s World Cup final.

Initially announcing he would not resign despite calls to do so, he has now announced his resignation in an exclusive interview with Piers Morgan.

Rubiales said: “I am going (to resign) because I cannot continue my work.

‘I’ve spoken to my daughters and they know it’s not a question about me. They tell me to focus on my dignity and my life.

“In this situation, this is what I have to do now.”

Rubiales also clutched his crotch in the moments after the final ended, but was initially reluctant to give up his role.

He claimed he was the victim of a “political and media lynching” and that he was “promoting feminism” in a statement.
