Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 has a script so ‘weird’ that one of its writers is amazed Disney accepted it

The upcoming sixth Pirates Of The Caribbean movie has such a strange script that one of the writers is surprised Disney accepted it.

Craig Mazin, who wrote the critically acclaimed HBO miniseries Chernobyl and co-wrote the network’s The Last Of Us, made the candid admission to Variety.

He has now written the next Pirates Of The Caribbean film with Ted Elliott, who himself wrote the first four films in the series with Terry Rossio.

β€œWe pitched it and thought there was no way they would buy it, it’s too weird. And they did!’ Craig revealed it in his new interview.

β€œAnd then he wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone waited,” the showrunner added.

The previous five films in the franchise were led by Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, a character beloved by legions of fans around the world.

However, Johnny’s career in Hollywood hit the doldrums in recent years due to his explosive legal battles with his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Amber and Johnny waged a blistering war of lawsuits after their 15-month marriage fell apart in a blizzard of back-and-forth abuse allegations.

After his victory in a defamation case against Amber last year, Johnny made a grand return to showbiz and was received enthusiastically at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where he premiered his film Jeanne du Barry.

Last May, just before Johnny’s triumph in court, Pirates Of The Caribbean producer Jerry Bruckheimer was opaque about the prospect of Johnny’s return to the franchise.

When the Sunday Times When asked if Johnny would return, Jerry said, “Not at this time,” but left the door ajar and added, “The future has yet to be decided.”

In 2020, with Johnny’s career still hanging in the balance, it emerged that Disney was developing Pirates Of The Caribbean 6 alongside a spin-off film starring Margot Robbie.

The Margot project would be written by Christina Hodson, who previously wrote the blonde bombshell’s supervillain caper Birds Of Prey.

However, last year Margot gave an interview about it Vanity fair claiming that Disney had decided to pass on its Pirates Of The Caribbean film.

β€œWe had an idea and had been developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led film – not quite female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would be really cool been. ‘ she said. “But I don’t think they want to do it.”

Jerry Bruckheimer then jumped into the fray and clarified that the spin-off wasn’t completely off the table, but was postponed in favor of the direct sequel.

β€œI think that script will come out at some point,” he said Collider of the spin-off. β€œWe’ve developed two different stories for Pirates and the other one is moving forward first, so we’re working on that, to try to make that one.”

Based on a children’s ride at Disneyland, the Pirates Of The Caribbean film franchise began in 2003 with a film subtitled The Curse Of The Black Pearl.

In the first three films, Johnny co-starred with Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom, playing the daughter of a governor and a blacksmith who fell in love.

Pirates Of The Caribbean quickly became a global juggernaut as a film franchise, releasing a total of five films between 2003 and 2017.

By the time the fifth film premiered, Johnny and Amber were already embroiled in the rancorous legal battle that would continue for another half-decade.
