German national team director Rudi Voller has told his stars they ‘can’t fuck their pants now’ after a humiliating defeat to Japan in a friendly match.

The Euro 2024 hosts were handed a 4-1 defeat on Saturday, with manager Hansi Flick insisting he is the right man for the job despite recording just four wins in 17 games.

Germany face a difficult test on Tuesday when they host World Cup finalists France at Borussia Dortmund’s Signal Iduna Park.

Voller, who was part of Germany’s 1990 World Cup-winning squad, was far from impressed by the nature of the defeat to Japan and expects a much better performance against France.

As reported by Sports1, he said, “We can’t shit our pants right now. We are Germany.

‘No one has to be afraid on Tuesday. The boys can do it, they all play for top clubs.’

Voller also said in his speech to the press that losing 4-1 is a ‘shame’ and that he will speak to Flick on Sunday.

He said: We are all still in shock. Losing 4-1 is a shame.

‘We all need to take a good look at ourselves and see what happens next. We would all do well to sleep on it tonight.

‘I just spoke to Hansi, he is deeply affected. We’ll talk tomorrow about why that happened. That was a shame.

The Germans hoped that the match against Japan nine months before they were due to host the Euro 2024 tournament would mark a new beginning for them. Instead it was a debacle and their third defeat in a row, amid cheers and whistles from the home fans.

Flick was already in the spotlight before the match, with his team having won just four of their last 16 games before Saturday and having crashed out of the first round of the World Cup last year.

“I know there is a dynamic in football and I cannot predict what will happen, but from my side we are doing everything we can to prepare the team well,” Flick told reporters.

“I think we are doing well and I think I am (the right man for the job),” he said when asked specifically about his future.

He also added: ‘I am very disappointed and we have to admit that Japan has a very good team. We don’t have the resources to defeat such a compact defense.

‘We have started well. But they score on their first chance, we come back and level the score and we felt the support, but then they score again. There were too many individual mistakes in the second half.’
