Working for those caucus votes! Donald Trump flips burgers and autographs balls for students before heading to the Iowa college football game to face DeSantis

  • Donald Trump joined a fraternity at Iowa State University to watch today’s college football game
  • Trump has enjoyed his popularity in the Midwestern state as he leads the polls with 51 percent support among caucus voters
  • DeSantis also appeared at the Iowa game with Gov. Kim Reynolds

Trump made a key stop on his campaign trail at a college dorm in Iowa, where he signed footballs and grilled burgers with the younger crowd.

The former president was recorded on video receiving a huge round of applause from a crowd of students as he arrived at the Alpha Gamma Ro Agriculture Fraternity House at Iowa State University.

His trip to the Midwestern state comes after polls show 51 percent of voters in the Iowa caucus said Trump would be their first choice in an Iowa State University survey.

DeSantis lagged far behind Trump in Iowa with 14 percent support, but his team says it would settle for a “strong second place.” A DeSantis campaign official said they want to reduce this to a two-way race.

Before the first Republican presidential debate, Trump led the polls in Iowa at 41 percent and DeSantis at 19 percent, but the gap has widened over the past three weeks as Trump appeared to gain more support from Iowa voters.

Trump is now basking in his popularity in the state as he joins students who gathered in Des Moines on Saturday, September 9, for the Iowa versus Iowa State football game.

Fraternity members cheered on ā€œDonaldā€ as the former president signed footballs and threw them into the crowd of students.

Trump united with Iowa State fans for their tailgate, where he grilled burgers as the frat bros prepared for the big game that the Iowa Hawkeyes are favored to win.

Trump relies on state party events that offer large, friendly audiences for free, while his political organization faces millions of dollars in legal fees as he faces four criminal charges.

Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidate Florida Governor Ron DeSantis greeted football fans before the NCAA college game.

DeSantis and Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds sat with fans in packed bleacher seats during the game.

Trump, on the other hand, opted for a more private seat in one of the glass boxes at the Iowa-Iowa football game at Jack Trice Stadium.

Gov. Reynolds has not yet endorsed a candidate for the Republican Party nomination, but has often appeared with DeSantis and his wife, Casey.

DeSantis and Reynolds were joined by Carson King, 24 ā€“ the Iowa native who started a foundation to raise money for the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital by asking for beer money with a funny sign on it.

DeSantis told reporters they were having a good time, saying, “It’s a decent atmosphere, probably a little more civil than the Florida-Georgia game.”

Other candidates, including Doug Burgum, the governor of North Dakota, and Asa Hutchinson, the former governor of Arkansas, attended the Iowa-Iowa contest.

Hutchinson told reporters he favored the underdog. He said, ‘I’m an underdog in this race and I want the underdogs to win’

Burgum and Hutchinson met at a tailgate honoring veterans, where Sen. Joni Ernst spent most of the afternoon.

When asked who he was advocating for, DeSantis said he “wouldn’t do anything to upset Reynolds, an Iowa State graduate.”
