Kadarius Toney produced an early contender for worst performance of the season Thursday night — and Giants fans couldn’t help but laugh at his expense.
With Travis Kelce going down with an injury against the Lions in Week 1, Patrick Mahomes needed his other receivers to step up in the All-Pro’s absence.
That didn’t happen, and the main culprit was Toney, who dropped three passes in the game as the defending champions suffered a 21-20 home loss to Detroit.
As if three drops weren’t bad enough — Jacksonville’s Zay Jones led the entire season with 13 points, for context — Toney even directly contributed to the Lions’ scoring.
His first drop of the night bounced off his hands and into the arms of Detroit safety Brian Branch, who took the ball the other way for a 50-yard touchdown.
Toney dropped a pass on third down later in the third quarter – forcing the team to settle for a field goal – and failed to convert an attempt with just 2:25 left in the game, putting Kansas City ahead was looking for a late lead.

The former Giants first-round pick capped his nightmare with one receiving yard and a negative rushing yard, and New York fans didn’t hide their amusement online.
The oft-injured receiver played just 12 games for the Giants in two years before the franchise traded him to the Chiefs last season. (literally) gave Big Blue the middle finger after winning the Super Bowl with the Chiefs in February.
So it wasn’t surprising to see Giants fans enjoying Toney’s raucous night.
“Do Chiefs fans still want to defend Kadarius Toney?” Giants Daily asked on Twitter.
“Droppenheimer,” one fan hilariously labeled the wideout.

Another fan pointed out that the trade package the Giants received for Toney — a third- and sixth-round pick — helped the team land Darren Waller this summer.
Even some of the team’s beat reporters took some swipes at the player, whom the Giants selected with the 20th overall pick in 2021.
“There is no way I can trust Kadarius Toney,” ESPN’s Jordan Raanaan said. That’s why the Giants traded him.”
And The Record’s Art Stapleton said, “All those wondering how Giants could let Kadarius Toney out of the building last year refused to see the big picture.”
“He’s a gadget player, not a WR1.”
Even some Giants reporters offered some harsh analysis of Toney afterward
Mahomes defended Toney after the game.
‘I have confidence in KT. He missed a lot of training camps. “Obviously he wanted to play and fought hard during rehab so he could play,” the quarterback said.
“Things don’t always go your way, obviously he would have wanted to catch a few in the game, but I have confidence that he will be the man I go to in those crucial moments and he will go and make the catch and win some games for us, like he did last year, and get him more and more reps. I’m sure those drops will disappear.’
It remains to be seen if coach Andy Reid has as much confidence in Toney as Mahomes, but the quarterback is hoping his favorite target Kelce can return in Week 2.
