Portland State Vikings football head coach Bruce Barnum has revealed that his team’s 81-7 loss to the Oregon Ducks wasn’t the most painful thing to happen to his team that day.

Barnum appeared on ‘The Bare Truth with John Canzano’ when he stated that while most of his team avoided serious injury in the brutal defeat, one unnamed player had “his ear ripped off” in the defeat.

‘We’re doing well. Knock on wood. One man had his ear torn off. They stitched him back up and now they say he has a concussion,” Barnum said. “So he’s gone, but I think he’s fine.”

‘Not the whole ear. Partial ear detachment,” Barnum clarified.

“I think it was from when his helmet got knocked off, and I don’t think his ear came out of his helmet.”

Turning to the rest of the game, Ducks quarterback Bo Nix threw for 287 yards and three touchdowns before going to the bench early in the third quarter and No. 15 Oregon built a 43-point lead at halftime during the one-sided loss.

It was the most points for the Ducks in a game in the modern era, and a scoring record at Autzen Stadium.

“I thought we went out and did what we had to do, scored a lot of points and were consistent. We didn’t make any mistakes, we didn’t beat ourselves,” Nix said. ‘I thought it was a very clean match.’

It was also Oregon’s 19th straight home opener win. The Ducks have won 31 consecutive non-conference games at Autzen Stadium since 2008.

Bucky Irving ran for 119 yards and two scores, while Jordan James rushed for 86 and three more. Troy Franklin and Gary Bryant Jr. each caught a few TD passes.

Dante Chachere threw for 35 yards and the lone touchdown for Portland State, which plays in the Big Sky conference. Chachere also ran 53 yards.

“Oregon’s opponents are going to have a hard time finding a weakness on that team,” said Portland State coach Bruce Barnum. “I just saw four quarters of them and they’re damn good. Not only are they fast, they are also a strong football team. … We were surpassed everywhere.’

Nix entered the season as the nation’s most veteran quarterback with 47 career starts. He was an early Heisman hopeful, finishing last season with 29 touchdown passes, 14 rushing scores and one TD catch in 13 games after transferring from Auburn to Oregon.
