A female prisoner has alleged that she was sexually assaulted by a trans prisoner with male genitalia in an all-female prison.
The inmate at Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women, where she has been held since 2003, claims she was assaulted in September and October last year.
She has now filed a lawsuit against the New Jersey Department of Corrections over alleged lack of “corrective action” from prison guards over the “sexually aggressive and harassing behavior of transgender people.”
The department is accused of failing to take steps to protect inmates even after “two female inmates became pregnant through sexual interactions with transgender people,” according to the local news outlet. My Central Jersey.

The transgender prisoner who allegedly sexually assaulted her has since been transferred to a men’s institution.
Another claim in the lawsuit alleges that transgender inmates were housed with female inmates in areas where security cameras were not present.
In a separate lawsuit against the Department of Corrections, a former Edna Mahan inmate alleges she was forced to have sex with a male prison guard.
She claims the guard was in her cell, slapped her on the foot on August 21, 2021, and told her to “get up and come over here.”
The guard then allegedly led her to a bathroom, where he turned off his body camera, unbuttoned his pants and demanded a sexual act from the prisoner, claims in the lawsuit show.
The guard told the prisoner he could make up for her time in prison “very well” and that she “didn’t want to leave with missing teeth,” the lawsuit alleges.

She then performed the sexual act with him and after that day she never saw the guard again because, according to the lawsuit, he was transferred to a men’s prison.
These are just two of the many lawsuits filed against Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women.
Governor Phil Murphy ordered the prison to close in June 2021 after prisoner abuse scandals became public.
No new location for the prison has yet been announced, and the project is estimated to cost $300 million.
Murphy had requested $90 million from this year’s budget before the closure.
