Mason Greenwood’s loanee club Getafe has been labeled ‘tone deaf’ after the Spain side praised ‘MasonMania’ in social media posts following the controversial attacker’s signing from Manchester United.

Getafe moved to Greenwood on transfer deadline day and took part in his first training session on Tuesday.

Greenwood is trying to rebuild his career after not playing league football since December 2021, having been arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of crimes, including attempted rape.

The 21-year-old was subsequently suspended by Man United, but in February the Crown Prosecution Service dropped the charges after key witnesses withdrew and new material came to light.

Man United completed their internal investigation into the player’s conduct in August and agreed with the 21-year-old forward that his career should be ‘resumed’ outside Old Trafford.

Getafe were criticized for their decision to sign Greenwood, but the club continued to promote his arrival on their social media accounts.

A clip released to Twitter showed Greenwood greeting and posing for photos with young supporters.

Getafe called the clip ‘The MasonMania’, with the new attacker also signing a fan’s flag.

The Spanish team was criticized for the post on social media, with the club being labeled ‘tone deaf’ and having ‘zero shame’.

“Getafe must be the most tone-deaf club I’ve ever seen in my life. Read the room,” said one account.

“This is all a bit mental. I’m still wrapping my head around their marketing strategy. Seems like they’re just forcing us to desensitize everyone,” said a second.

“I’m sorry this is a bit comical at the moment. Wtf????, a third wrote, while another commented, “There is no shame in this world.”

Despite criticism on social media, Greenwood received a warm welcome during an open training session on Tuesday.

A young fan was pictured holding up a sign that read “Mason G. Can you please give me your t-shirt.”

The board featured pictures of Greenwood and Manchester United’s club crest, as well as his former shirt with the Premier League club.

Fans were also pictured wearing Greenwood’s new Getafe shirt, with the England striker confirmed as LaLiga’s new number 12.

Greenwood will be presented as a Getafe player on Tuesday evening.

His first training session was promoted on the club’s social media, with a video on the side’s English-language Twitter account showing Greenwood taking the field with his new teammates ahead of the open session.

The video was shared with the caption, “We love you Mason Greenwood,” tagging the player and adding multiple heart emojis.

It is believed Greenwood’s loan deal with Getafe includes a break clause that would allow the side to send the player back to United during the January period if he is not happy with the way the transfer has progressed.

A domestic violence charity in Spain has criticized Getafe’s decision to sign Greenwood and is calling on the club to reverse its decision.

A spokesman for the club reportedly defended the move, stating that Greenwood has been ‘declared innocent’.

Getafe head coach Jose Bordalas has defended the club, but admitted it was a “delicate situation”.

“It’s a very delicate situation to downplay this issue,” Bordalas said.

“Everyone knows what happened and appropriate measures have been taken. Everyone knows how it ended, with a non-conviction verdict.

“He is a footballer of a very high level and comes to Getafe with enormous enthusiasm.”
