Supporters on court 5 of the US Open were treated to a surprise visitor on Saturday evening when a squirrel interrupted play at Flushing Meadows.
Laura Siegemund, who was beaten in singles by Coco Gauff, played women’s doubles alongside Vera Zvonareva against Greet Minnen and Yanina Wickmayer.
The second round doubles match took place in a second set when the referee stopped play midway through a point.
Siegemund and Zvonareva looked at the umpire in disbelief before seeing the intruder who had caused the point to be replayed.
As Siegemund threw the ball up to serve, the squirrel jumped onto the court behind Minnnen and Wickmayer.

The animal then sped along the field as the action continued on lane 5. Just as Zvonareva put away a volley to win the point, the umpire called let and ordered the point to be played again.
The players and supporters then watched as the squirrel ran across the field for a few seconds, seemingly looking for an escape route.
The rodent jumped onto the billboards before jumping back onto the field. After running around for a few more seconds, the squirrel finally found a way out.
“He doesn’t want to go that way,” the commentator said. ‘I say, dear man, do you have a ticket?’
Several supporters pulled out their camera phones to capture the comedic interruption.
But Siegemund and Zvonareva were unaffected by it, as they won 10 of the next 11 games to triumph 6-7 6-2 6-0.
