From zero to hero! Jordan Pickford rescues a point for Everton with incredible 98th minute triple save, after his comical own goal had given Sheffield United the lead

Jordan Pickford was the Everton hero as his treble save in stoppage time prevented Sean Dyche’s men from a fourth straight defeat to Sheffield United.

With just seconds left and the score at 2-2, the Blades swung in a corner that was met by Oli McBurnie’s head.

But the striker’s powerful header was brilliantly saved by Pickford, who then saved McBurnie’s follow-up effort and then scrambled the ball away from the onrushing Sheffield United players for a third incredible save.

The England number one then responded to the moment by making a nonchalant face to the Blades fans as he held the ball.

The moment was the perfect response to the comedic own goal he scored earlier in the game, as Cameron Archer’s shot bounced off the post and then bounced off Pickford’s back into the net to put the home side ahead.

Thanks to the super saves, Everton managed to hold on to a 2-2 draw and take their first point of the season

Fans on social media were quick to praise the Everton goalkeeper, with one fan saying: ‘Anyone who says Pickford is no good, wiggle your head, donuts!! Number 1 in England for a reason!’

That sentiment was popular after the saves with another post reading; “I know he has his critics, but Pickford’s double save there was unbelievable.”

The point was Everton’s first of the season and another tweet suggested it is performances like Pickford’s today that will ensure they avoid being relegated from the division and the goalkeeper needs recognition at Goodison. After the draw in which the Toffees took their first point of the season, Pickford said he was happy with the point but knows there is still room for improvement on his part.

“I think there are a lot of positives, but still a few negatives.” Pickford said.

“When you’re 1-0 up, you’re in control, but then they’re going to score two. That’s why the Premier League is the best league in the world. You can’t take any team for granted. Then they got lucky when the second goal bounced off me.

Pickford was then at the end of one of his more awkward moments, when Archer’s shot bounced off the post and rebounded off the Everton stopper’s back.

Sean Dyche’s men managed to save a point from the game when Horace Danjuma turned in a Nathan Patterson cross to equalize the game.
