Two teenagers have been arrested after a man was allegedly stabbed in broad daylight outside a busy Melbourne train station.

Police arrived at North Richmond train station shortly after 10 a.m. on Thursday and found a 53-year-old man with life-threatening injuries on Victoria St.

He was rushed to hospital, where his condition remains serious.

Following a public appeal for information, Victoria Police have revealed that two teenagers were arrested about 150km south-east of Melbourne on Friday.

Officers confiscated a kitchen knife when the two were arrested.

In a statement, a Victoria Police spokeswoman said the parties were believed to have known each other.

She said a 16-year-old boy was charged later that same day with intentionally causing serious injury, assault with a weapon and possession of drugs.

A 16-year-old girl was released pending further investigation.

The teenager has been released on bail to appear in juvenile court at a later date.
