Raheem Sterling is left OUT of Gareth Southgate’s England squad despite strong start to the season with Chelsea as Eddie Nketiah and Levi Colwill get first call-ups and Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire keep their places

Raheem Sterling is left OUT of Gareth Southgate’s England squad despite a strong start to the season at Chelsea, while Eddie Nketiah and Levi Colwill are called up for the first time and Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire keep their places

  • Despite good form, Sterling misses the third successive English team
  • Levi Colwill and Eddie Nketiah could win the first international matches against Ukraine or Scotland
  • Jordan Henderson retains his spot despite Liverpool’s move to Saudi Arabia

Raheem Sterling has been left out of the England squad to face Ukraine and Scotland despite a positive start to the season at Chelsea.

Gareth Southgate has included Chelsea defender Levi Colwill and midfielder Jordan Henderson despite moving from Liverpool to Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ettifaq.

Harry Maguire has also kept his place despite not playing for Manchester United so far this season.

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah has also been called up and could be lining up for his first cap.

But Sterling’s omission comes as a surprise after he started the season well for Chelsea, netting twice in their 3-0 win over Luton Town last Friday.

Southgate said he was pleased with Sterling’s start to the season but insisted he wanted to keep together the same group that made a strong start to their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

The Three Lions continue their European Championship qualifying campaign with a match against Ukraine in the Polish city of Wroclaw on Saturday, September 9.

They then head to Hampden Park in Glasgow on Tuesday 12 September for a friendly against Auld Enemy Scotland.

England have so far won all four European Championship qualifiers for Euro 2024 and top Group C, scoring 15 times and conceding only once.
