Gregg Berhalter apologized to EVERY USA player from the World Cup for his part in how the Gio Reyna scandal got out as he opens up on his regrets over the bitter row

U.S. men’s national team manager Gregg Berhalter said he sent notes to every member of the team going into the World Cup about his role in the Gio Reyna scandal.

Berhalter spoke at a leadership conference about an internal matter within the team, believing the comments would not leave the room.

However, they leaked and it was soon confirmed that Reyna was the subject of Berhalter’s comments.

That sparked a bigger scandal within US Soccer, opening an investigation into a domestic incident between Berhalter and his current wife in the 1990s.

During his first solo press conference since taking back leadership with the USMNT, Berhalter said he chose to reach out to each player individually.

Those letters apologized for his role in the Gio Reyna scandal — including his comments at a leadership conference that took place days after the U.S. World Cup elimination.

Reyna was not called up to the September camp in the US, as he had just returned to training due to an injury

“I sent a note to every player and apologized for the way it came out,” Berhalter told reporters. “I felt that if it hurt one player it was worth apologizing to the whole group and that’s what I did.”

As to why Reyna was not included in his most recent squad for a series of friendlies during the September international break, Berhalter said it was due to his recent return to training at Borussia Dortmund following an injury.

Berhalter later added that US Soccer is “excited to have (Gio back) in October for two games against good opponents.”

When it comes to building the team’s future further, Berhalter said that “a lot of good work has been done to build our identity on and off the pitch,” according to Sporting News. Kyle Bonn.
