Police are investigating a brawl in the city center involving Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles, in which it was claimed a mob of men ‘threatened to shoot the player and his brother’.

Northumbria Police officers were called after the clash on Westgate Road in Newcastle in the early hours of Sunday 20 August.

Lascelles had returned to Tyneside after Newcastle’s 1–0 defeat at Manchester City and was on a night out with his younger brother and a friend. The team had been given two days off by Eddie Howe.

They had just left Chinawhite nightclub when it was said that a man had punched Lascelles’ 19-year-old brother in the throat in an “unproven assault.” According to a bystander, the defender intervened and pushed the man away.

It is alleged that a bottle of vodka was then thrown at Lascelles, narrowly missing his head. A group of ‘six to eight’ men then allegedly ‘attacked’ the 29-year-old and he was ‘beaten from all sides’.

Lascelles left a club called Chinawhite when a man allegedly elbowed his 19-year-old younger brother as a bottle of vodka was allegedly thrown at the Newcastle defender.

It is said that he managed to throw one of the men to the ground, but his brother was ‘punched in the face and bleeding’. Their friend, meanwhile, was “kicked in the head and knocked unconscious.” It was during the argument that the group allegedly said they were going to “shoot” Lascelles.

In a video from Mail Sport, Lascelles leans over one of the men on the road and appears to call for calm when he is blinded and punched in the face. He responds by punching the same man.

Sources say the Nottingham-born star acted in self-defense during the incident, trying to protect his teenage brother.

The group of men then ran away before emergency services arrived and Lascelles’ friend was taken to hospital.

Bystanders say they feared he was dead, as he was unconscious for 15 minutes while paramedics worked on him. Police have since spoken to the alleged victim, although we understand no arrests have been made. Northumbria Police did not respond to Mail Sport prior to publication of this article.

Newcastle, meanwhile, is aware of the incident and has seen the video. They say the matter will be handled internally.

Lascelles, who joined the club in 2014, was an unused substitute in Newcastle’s 2-1 defeat at home to Liverpool on Sunday. He made 225 appearances for the Magpies and has been captain of the club since 2016.
