An elderly woman has lost her life after accidentally setting herself on fire at a bus stop in Western Australia.

It is understood that the 93-year-old woman was trying to light a cigarette when the accident happened last Friday Western Australian reports.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Kenwick, southeast of Perth.

The woman suffered severe burns and was taken to Fiona Stanley Hospital, where her condition was critical but stable Friday night.

The 93-year-old succumbed to her injuries the next day.

Quick-thinking witnesses and nearby medical personnel have been praised for their response to the moments after the woman accidentally set herself on fire.

Nurse Adriana Di Chiera, 25, was one of the first to arrive at the scene.

“When I was there her hair and body were on fire, I was horrified. She only had her shoes on… it was terrible,” she told the Western Australian.

The case is not considered suspicious, but a case of accidental self-harm.

Police were on the scene the next day and collected evidence from a nearby bin.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
