Sam Kerr made history in Australia during the FIFA Women’s World Cup and now the matildas captain has witnessed more history with partner Kristie Mewis as they saw Lionel Messi score his first MLS goal in New York.
After shaking off a calf injury that robbed Kerr of playing time in the World Cup group stage, the Chelsea star returned to help the Aussies reach the semi-finals for the first time in history.
Now she is enjoying a well-deserved break ahead of Chelsea’s Women’s Super League (WSL) season opener against Tottenham on October 2.
She is spending time in the United States with her international star partner Kristie Mewis and they shared many photos including how they attended to see Messi create an American sports first.
“Here for Messi,” Kerr posted with a starry-eyed emoji.
Kerr and Mewis are rivals on the football field, but partners in life and have enjoyed time together after the FIFA Women’s World Cup in the United States

Happy and in love, Mewis and Kerr are sharing numerous images on their social media accounts much to the delight of their followers
Mewis also shared a picture of the couple in love sharing a kiss in the hotel elevator.
“Chronicles of Hotels We’ve Stayed Together Continues,” Kerr wrote.
“(heart emoji) You forever.”
“How can anyone not love these two?” asked a follower.
“Makes me happy to see people happy,” another wrote.
“I am so inspired by you two. The way you are all able to hold onto your individual dreams and goals and so purposefully support each other is truly something to be admired and learned from,” another fan added.
Argentina’s World Cup winning captain entered the game in the 60th minute, along with former Barcelona teammate Sergio Busquets.
It took the Argentine superstar just a few seconds for his unparalleled skills to shine, a flash of brilliance that capped off a memorable Major League Soccer debut.
Messi’s stunning goal in the 89th minute helped a transformed Inter Miami beat the New York Red Bulls 2-0 and end an 11-match winless streak in the league.
“I catch myself looking at him instead of following my instructions,” said Miami defenseman Kamal Miller.
“It’s hard to stay focused when you’re so present.”
Rapper Fat Joe was one of the big names to attend Messi’s MLS debut for Inter Milan against the New York Red Bulls
Former NBA forward Carmelo Anthony and rapper French Montana were two of the other big names in attendance at the game
Kerr and Mewis were among a number of high-profile athletes and celebrities to see Messi’s exploits, including former NBA star Carmelo Anthony and New York hip-hop stars Fat Joe and French Montana.
Rap legend DMC, who announced before kickoff that he wants to run for the US presidency, were also in attendance. Vin Rock, DJ Kay Gee, DJ Skribble and DJ Scratcon were also in attendance.
Fans paid up to $20,000 for a ticket to see the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, but had to wait after Inter boss Tata Martino kicked off his superstar from the bench.
While this was Messi’s first MLS game, it was his ninth in the Inter Miami strip and he has now scored 11 goals in those games, winning all of them.
