The 49ers will “most likely” add a kicker to the current roster, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, as the team faces an injury crisis at the position.
Both of the team’s kickers, rookie Jake Moody and veteran Zane Gonzalez – who arrived via trade in March – are currently injured, leaving the team in trouble for just two weeks until the season opener against the Steelers.
Picked in the third round in this year’s NFL Draft from Michigan, Moody flexed his quad during practice last Wednesday.
And two days later, Gonzalez hurt his calf just before the preseason finale in San Francisco against the Chargers.
Shanahan resigned from the team, needing at least an insurance policy.
Kyle Shanahan said the team needs a ‘Plan B’ for Week 1 at the kicker position
Both rookie Jake Moody (left) and Zane Gonzalez, whom the team traded for in March, are injured
“We probably should,” he said when asked if the team would bring in another kicker.
“We definitely need to have a plan B for Week 1. That could have been Zane, but he probably won’t be ready for Week 1, given what happened to him.”
As for Moody, Shanahan called the rookie’s injury “week to week.”
“We hope he gets a chance for week 1,” he said.
Aside from the kick, the 49ers are considered a Super Bowl contender after winning two straight conference championships.
They begin their season on September 10 at 1 p.m. ET in Pittsburgh
