American rap legend DMC bizarrely claimed he would run for president ahead of Lionel Messi’s potential MLS debut at the Red Bull Arena.

Messi was benched for Inter Miami’s game against the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night, despite some fans spending more than $20,000 on tickets ahead of his league debut.

Since moving to the United States last month, the Barcelona legend has played only in cup competitions so far, helping Inter win the Leagues Cup final and reach the US Open Cup final last weekend.

His long-awaited MLS mood may have come off the bench in New York, but Messi’s relegation has done little to dampen the mood of DMC present at the Red Bull Arena.

Before the game, DMC, real name Darryl McDaniels, said in an interview with Apple TV that he will be running for president in an unexpected blowout before kickoff.

He first joked, “There’s a little Messi coming in here!”

McDaniels then continued: “The whole beauty of everything that happens, Messi being here, football, MLS, everything that happens, this is what the world is all about.

“We see so much division, but when we go to a football game, a concert, or a museum, where sports and art take place, it’s a true representation of how wonderful this world is. That can’t be.

“And I’m running for president today, because in a beautiful place like this… what better place to announce that?

“But it’s all about togetherness and people coming together.”
