Jason Galleghan: Rachel Galleghan’s brave act two years after her teenage son was brutally beaten to death over a pair of AirPods in Doonside, western Sydney

A heartbroken mother has vowed to look down on all 11 people accused of bashing her teenage son’s death by listening to everyone’s sentencing.

Jason Galleghan, 16, was reportedly lured to a house in Doonside, western Sydney, on August 4, 2021, and attacked by a gang of adults and youths in a crime that shocked Australia.

The teen was allegedly lured to the house over the false claim that he stole a woman’s AirPods.

Jason died in hospital four days later, surrounded by his heartbroken mother who “kissed him on his bruises and scrapes, hoping to take his pain away.”

Rachel Galleghan will now repeatedly relive the horror of her son’s death in hopes that justice will be served for all those accused of complicity in or perpetration of her son’s murder.

The details of the alleged attack on Jason were so poignant that a distraught Ms Galleghan left the room several times as they were described in court this week.

In a victim impact statement obtained by Mr Saturday TelegraphMs Galleghan recalled falling to her knees after seeing her seriously injured son in hospital following the alleged attack.

“I remember wanting to scream, scream and cry, but nothing came out of me. I was in shock and in so much pain,” she said.

Seeing all the doctors, nurses, monitors, cords and hearing the beeping noises around Jason was ‘horrific’.

“I spent four days in the hospital, each day the shock, the pain and the sadness grew deeper. I didn’t understand anything and went into denial.’

“I couldn’t believe my son would die.

“I couldn’t understand how anyone could do this to anyone, let alone my son.”

Ms Galleghan has vowed to face the 11 people responsible for her son’s death in court, hoping that every one of them will face justice.

On Wednesday, a 16-year-old boy, referred to only as ‘BE’, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars after pleading guilty to murder.

The court heard he helped lure Jason to the house and beat him 52 times during the prolonged attack.

Footage of the incident later posted to Instagram shows the teen, who was 14 at the time, kicking Jason’s head and later stomping his chest.

The teen had posted on social media hours before the attack that he was “bashing someone today, lmao.”

The attack lasted more than half an hour, but only about seven minutes were recorded and available for court.

One shot showed the teen saying, “Oi, stop… look at him.”

The details of the alleged attack were so deplorable that his distraught mother had to leave court several times.

“We are listening to (BE)’s role in my son’s murder here today and I am so overwhelmed with anger towards him for what he did to my son. (BE) stood behind the group and held Jason against his will,” said Ms Galleghan.

“It is now important to hold him and everyone else accountable for their actions and seek justice. I am in utter pain because I know my precious son could have been saved if only one person did the right thing and helped him.”

Acting NSW Supreme Court Justice Robert Hulme viewed the footage repeatedly.

“I’m not convinced it expresses any concern, or that he was trying to convince any of them to stop the attack,” he said.

In a letter to the court, the teen wrote: “I took someone’s life. It’s the worst thing anyone can do. I have a bad feeling about it every day, I see his face and everyone hits him.”

“I can’t believe I did that and let it go on for so long,” he wrote

“The family must be really upset, they probably hate me and they have every reason to hate me and want me to go to jail for the rest of my life.”

The teen nodded to his family and sat motionless staring at the ground as the judge handed down his sentence on Wednesday.

The only time he faced Judge Hulme was when the words ’15 years’ were uttered.

He will serve his sentence in juvenile detention until he turns 21 and will be eligible for parole in August 2031 when he turns 24.
