A European study found that “eco-friendly” paper straws, believed to be planet-friendly, contain long-lasting and potentially toxic PFAS chemicals. Of the 39 brands tested, PFAS was prevalent in most straws, especially those made of paper and bamboo. These synthetic chemicals are often used to make products water, heat and stain resistant, such as outdoor clothing and non-stick pans.

Belgian researchers found PFAS synthetic chemicals known as "forever chemicals," in most paper and bamboo straws, which are often considered eco-friendly alternatives. PFAS are linked to health problems and persist in the environment for thousands of years. The study tested 39 straw brands made from different materials and raised concerns about the potential harm to humans and the environment.

Analysis of 39 straw brands found that 69% contained synthetic PFAS chemicals, which are most commonly found in paper straws. Banned substances such as PFOA were detected along with water-soluble PFAS such as TFA and TFMS, raising concerns about leaching into beverages.
