According to reports in Spain, Barcelona may be required to finalize their future loan deal for Joao Cancelo if they reach the group stage of the Champions League.

The LaLiga champions are closer to an agreement over the willing Manchester City defender, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Bayern Munich after a disagreement with Pep Guardiola.

However, Bayern were unwilling to buy the 29-year-old and promptly sent him back to Manchester at the end of last season. Mundo DeportivoBarcelona would be willing to commit to the player if a certain condition is met.

The outlet reports that Xavi’s side will be forced to pay £21.4 million (€25 million) if they qualify for the group stage of this season’s Champions League.

That prospect may have seemed like a formality in the past, but despite winning Spain’s top flight last season, the Catalan giants still managed to slip out of European competition at the first hurdle for the second consecutive year.
