- Sam Burgess receives a $700,000 payout from South Sydney
- The former dual-code England star left his role as assistant coach on Wednesday
- Burgess will take over as head coach of Warrington Wolves next season
Sam Burgess is on the cusp of a huge payout after parting ways with the South Sydney Rabbitohs despite already agreeing to a coaching role in the Super League.
The Bunnies confirmed that Burgess and fellow assistant coach John Morris both left the club on Wednesday morning, after a hectic day of encounters involving the club’s powerbrokers.
According to the Daily telegramthe former dual-code England international will receive a $700,000 payout from the Bunnies.
Burgess inscribed himself in Rabbitoh folklore by winning the drought-breaking 2014 grand final despite suffering a broken cheekbone on his first hit of the match
He retired from the NRL for medical reasons in 2019, but his contract had another four years to run, which ran until the end of 2023.

The contract included an option for 2024, meaning the 34-year-old was entitled to a rich payout on his departure from Redfern.
Since his retirement from rugby league, Burgess has reportedly received around $3 million from the Rabbitohs.
He would leave at the end of the season to return to England and take over as head coach of Warrington Wolves from 2024.
“I have made the decision to move out of South Sydney given the circumstances,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.
“My immediate focus is on the birth of our baby and preparing for my new role at Warrington.”
Rabbitohs’ statement read: “South Sydney Rabbitohs have today agreed with Sam Burgess that he will be relieved of his assistant coaching duties for the remainder of the season to allow him to focus on his upcoming role with the Warrington Wolves and the imminent birth of his successor. child.’
Burgess’s sudden departure comes after he and Morris reportedly spoke to Rabbitohs boss Jason Demetriou earlier this week about his perceived special treatment from Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker.
After chasing the NRL for the first half of the season, the Bunnies have come off badly and will need to beat old foes the Roosters in the final round to have any hope of playing the finals.
Rabbitohs boss Jason Demetriou is under pressure for allegedly not holding Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker to the same standards as other players at the club
With the club struggling, the microscope has been applied to superstars Mitchell and Walker, scrutinizing the $1 million fullback.
Mitchell has been called up for a series of ‘lazy’ incidents both on and off the field and will miss the Souths crucial game against the Roosters after being suspended for one game for elbowing Tyson Frizell in the Bunnies’ 29-10 defeat against Newcastle.
The Australia international was of no help to his cause after he was spotted drinking beer on stage with country singer Luke Coombs in Sydney in the days leading up to the Knights’ defeat.
The Rabbitohs board met on Tuesday evening to formalize the decision, after the club’s executives met all day to decide on the future of Burgess and Morris.
Every last step was postponed when team owner Russell Crowe was consulted on Tuesday night Daily telegram reported – but the club later denied that the Hollywood star was involved.
On Wednesday, Demetriou responded to rumors of preferential treatment after Burgess’ departure was confirmed.
Mitchell was recently criticized for a disappointing performance
Walker is also under scrutiny after reportedly having a heated clash with head coach Demetriou following the club’s loss to the Sharks earlier this month
“Latrell is a big presence, as was Sam when he played, but to say that he (Mitchell) dominates the club (…) he’s part of the leadership team,” he said.
“Cameron Murray is our captain and is doing a fantastic job as a leader at this club.
“Does (Mitchell) dominate the club? No, it’s a ridiculous comment. He was out for three months, who dominated the club then?
“One minute everyone was saying we were too soft on him and that they run the club. And the next moment I’m arguing with everyone. So which one is it?’
