  • Counterfeit products can harm health, a luxury brand protector warned

An undercover investigator has revealed that counterfeit perfume bottles claiming to be made by many of the world’s top luxury brands can often be filled with animal urine.

Detective and corporate researcher Tamer Bakiner claims that people around the world are “putting their own health at risk” by purchasing counterfeit goods, as most, if not all, are made with little to no regard for safety or health.

“Stop buying it. First of all, it is dangerous for your health, among other things, they mix urine in perfumes to get the yellow color. That’s disgusting.

“Secondly, it supports a very worthless, inhumane enterprise,” he said in an interview with the German tabloid. Image.

Bakiner was not alone in warning that counterfeits could harm people’s health.

Leo Longauer, the 54-year-old director of brand protection at the luxury goods conglomerate LVHM, which operates brands such as Dior, Bulgari, Louis Vuitton and Dom Pérignon, said counterfeit products could be “extremely dangerous to your health.”

‘Sunglasses and glasses are offered that, contrary to the label, have no UV protection.

‘The (perfume) mixture is filled with animal urine. Studies have shown that. It’s cheap to get.

“Counterfeits are treated with chemicals that can cause allergies and skin irritation or rashes. This should not be taken lightly,” he warned.

He said that people may unknowingly buy counterfeit products because they are virtually indistinguishable from genuine products.

“Many counterfeits are barely distinguishable from the original,” he admitted.

But the intellectual property enforcer warned that customers who, knowingly or unintentionally, buy counterfeit goods “endanger their own health, support criminals and harm their own economy.”

‘The working conditions of local people, for example in Turkey, China, Vietnam or India, are inhumane. It does not meet the standards in Europe.

‘Children are also used to working. People are being exploited – combined with human trafficking and money laundering.’

The global counterfeit industry is huge and profitable.

Criminal networks dealing in counterfeit goods often span the globe. Counterfeit goods are often manufactured in poorer countries with substandard labor and safety laws before being sold in wealthier countries for staggering profits.

Europol estimates that as much as 2.5 percent of all world trade involves the production and sale of counterfeit or substandard goods.

This equates to an eye-popping sum of £360 billion.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development said in a 2016 report that the ‘best estimates’ indicated that Britain alone imports £13.6 billion worth of counterfeit goods, equivalent to 3 per cent of all British imports.
