Former French striker Thierry Henry has been appointed head coach of the country’s Under-21s until 2025, the French Football Federation said in a statement on Monday.
The great Arsenal player will lead the team through next year’s Olympics in Paris, replacing Sylvain Ripoll, who was sacked following France’s early exit from this year’s Under-21 European Championship. Former Angers manager Gerald Baticle will join Henry’s staff as assistant coach.
Henry, France’s second all-time leading goalscorer, returns to management after leaving his role as Belgium’s assistant coach after last year’s World Cup.
The 46-year-old, also a former Barcelona player, previously coached the youth teams of Arsenal, AS Monaco in Ligue 1 and Montreal in Major League Soccer. Henry ended his playing career in 2014 as the all-time top scorer for Arsenal – 228 goals – and after 123 caps and 51 goals for France.
Henry’s debut as the Under-21 leader is for a friendly against Denmark on September 7, before France take on Slovenia in the European Championship qualifiers four days later.
